4:41 PM Shreks' Personal Mission Statement...
It is difficult in the age of the computer, ipod and google, to decipher whether or not what we hear, read and speak is the truth. Are our lives influenced by the power elite, who own everything in this world, including you and your thoughts? Is it possible to be critical of the world we live in, whilst surrounded and consumed by information from supposedly “objective” and truthful sources? The media corporations are all influenced by the need to make rich people’s pockets heavier than they already are, and subjugate the poor. Are we ever going to be able to escape the ‘inescapable’ matrix that we live in and see reality for what it is? Knowledge is the only way to do this, one can only get out of this web of lies, deceit and pretense through critical analyses of “reality”.
I am here to promote doubt, there is no ‘reality’, what you see around you is a construct of the capitalists, who have an intent of exploiting and abusing the uninformed and ignorant, they do not want to hear the raging sound of your voices and anger, but instead prefer to hear the “ka-ching” of rattling coins that enter their bank accounts daily due to this worlds chronic and deafening silence.
The character of our blog ‘HD Archibald’ is a multi dimensional character with four differing personalities within one person. I represent the personality that chooses to question the social constructs of the world that are manipulated by external factors, for malicious self empowerment. HD Archibald has conflicting views on contemporary topical debates, yet they all add insight that pilots people to reach firm conclusions based on the plethora of arguments provided. One has to be cynical and suspicious of any information handed to them, and that is what my character seeks to accomplish.
The world of journalism has become corrupt, if it wasn’t always. It is difficult in this day and age to represent the views of the minorities, and the disenfranchised, more so as a journalist. We live in a world of conformity and this affects the media industry itself, the so called “hard news”, with its clinical lines that we see today, is all rubbish as it is all influenced by the worlds mafia bosses, who seek to continue to plunder the planet and its peoples. All of this is done right under our noses, and hidden behind the heavily make-upped faces (with their rouge lipsticks) of the news corporations of the world.
It is time to put an end to the ridicule played on our minds, and start seeing things for what they are, the big question is what is our reality then if it not what we have come to be accustomed to, and how does one get out of this whirlpool of deception and treachery?
4:40 PM “You call this Journalism?”
By Stephanie Pretorius
Journalism is going to the dogs! That's what H.D Archibald's critical persona would say. As Journalism and Media Studies students we are continually told that we need to be professional and objective, we need to search for the truth and not trust anyone in our quest to provide the public with accurate stories and reports of the latest news. However, there is no possible way that a journalist or anyone for that matter is able to be objective in the reporting of events. Many Journalism and Media theorists claim that if one simply quotes a source then a story is accurate and objective but the people or organisations that are being quoted bring their own bias to the situation in their interpretation of events and circumstances and the context in which a quote is placed is also subjective and has been created by the reporter.
Along the same line of thought is the fact that we have to consider the role of industry and economics in the production of present day media. The media is no longer the 'watch dog of democracy' but rather a mass-produced, consumer based product that is there to keep society suppressed by feeding communities certain view points and perspectives that create brainwashed individuals who do not have the capacity to object to the oppression of the elite and powerful. This is partially because of the fact that advertising is so crucial to the ability to produce media and now controls so much of the information included within publications or broadcasts.
In this blog, as H.D. Archibald's critical persona, I aim to discuss critically the way in which the media is failing to do what it was created for and why today's journalists need to pull up their socks and begin to actually believe in their quest to provide the public with information that does not claim to be objective but rather states their outlook and then strives to inform the public to the best of its ability. Join me on a journey to see if there are still any real journalists left in the world who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in and are also not afraid of criticism of their work.

9:44 PM Suspect Identification Form - Tutorial Two
So as JMS students we are expected to attend tutorials that cover a range of different topics and issues related to what we are studying. This week we had to fill out a "Suspect Identification Form" the aim of which was to make us look at different aspects of our identity and the way we describe ourselves in different situations. The first part of the tutorial was based on physical appearences while the sencond looked at the way we want to be viewed in different spheres of our lives. Please comment on this post and share with us want you learnt and were able to take away from this tutorial.

9:37 PM “Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO! It is H.D. Archibald, back from the past coming to a blog spot near you.”
-By Tania Pehl
H.D Arch flabbergasted at how culture has changed, referring directly to the environment on Rhodes University, in which he is stuck for eternity, is amused at the culture of the students. For example, despite the amazing diversity, the white elephant sitting in the room is left unnoticed. However, the characters that this university has produced is shocking to H.D. system as he is not accustomed to absurd “Marish” life these animals seem to play. The bowl surely does make an environment for wonders beyond your comprehension. As having died a tragic death, I, H.D Arch have to do the one thing I left the world doing… capturing the world and sharing my thoughts and opinions in this new age of popular culture and technology. Also it is a way for me to reconcile my out-dated lifestyle and adjustment to modern South Africa. It is important to call serious issues out while giving readers some tongue-in-cheek dialogue to poke fun of the serious issues that make us take life so seriously. I am a bit of a sarcastic fellow myself… teenagers of today scare me… while the sheep play in the field, we have come to just accept what we are told by those controlling our country. How can we not be sure, aliens will not abduct us tomorrow, yet we know they exist, but they will not tell us the truth? It is way for students like me, despite the age gap to discuss serious issues while still leaving space to enjoy the mishaps of the people around us. My tragic death was a huge freak accident and I wish I had not forgotten to cut down that random piece of string on the ceiling… my fiddle career was really kicking off. I was hoping to play at Barack Obama’s inauguration, how did the Americans pull that one off! A black president… I do not care what form I have come back as but this life seems it will be quite interesting, I would never have thought it. But wait, they comparing him to Nelson Mandela… hmm? Sorry Barack I do not quite understand how that works… what impact has he made if he has just been nominate into office, instant fame. WOW! Please would someone give me the formula for that? Journalism is important as it allows us to discuss these issues weather offensive to another or not… I am just calling it out, are you?

This one time, at band camp... H. D. Archibald had finished practising his fiddle, he packed it away and accidentally slipped off the chair upon which sat when he noticed the pile of Journalism and Media Studies homework he still had to do. A stray broken string from his fiddle broke his fall but unfortunately strangled poor H. D. Archibald in the process.
Stay tuned to see how the ghost of poor old H. D. Archibald struggles to come to terms with his own death in the current tyranny of the purple bowl of Grahamstown...
